A heated debate has erupted once again between Bangladesh and the International Cricket Council (ICC), this time over the scheduling of the U19 World Cup. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is not holding back, calling out the ICC for an "unfair schedule" that has left their team exhausted and frustrated.
BCB's game development coordinator, Habibul Bashar, has spoken out about the challenges his team faced due to the sudden changes in their travel plans. Initially, Bangladesh was set to play warm-up matches in Masvingo and then travel to Harare for the main tournament. However, the ICC's last-minute schedule adjustments meant the team had to play practice games at two separate venues, requiring a four-hour drive between them.
"To ensure our players weren't exhausted before the crucial India match, the BCB even paid for an internal flight out of its own funds, as the bus journey was too long and direct flights were limited," Bashar explained. This extra expense and effort by the BCB highlights the impact of the ICC's scheduling decisions.
The situation worsened as Bangladesh's head coach, Naveed Nawaz, and several players expressed their frustration over the hectic travel schedule. They had to endure a nearly nine-hour bus ride during the monsoon season from Harare to Bulawayo for their opening group match. Despite the BCB's efforts to arrange internal flights for the matches against India and New Zealand, the team still faced significant travel burdens.
"The schedule was extremely unfair to us," Bashar revealed. "We notified the ICC about the travel burden before the tournament, requesting adjustments to our practice games to minimize back-and-forth travel. Unfortunately, they didn't listen, and once the tournament starts, these changes become challenging to implement."
In contrast, teams like India, Pakistan, England, and Australia enjoyed a much lighter travel schedule, adding fuel to the controversy. This raises questions about the fairness and consideration shown by the ICC towards all participating teams.
