Shorts Day: Creating Safe Spaces for Mental Health Conversations (2026)

Shorts Day, an annual mental health campaign in Tasmania, is back for its sixth year with a renewed focus on creating safe spaces for open conversations. This initiative, led by SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY, encourages Tasmanians to wear shorts on a cold Friday as a symbol of embracing vulnerability and fostering mental health discussions.

The campaign's founder, Mitch McPherson, emphasizes the importance of creating an environment where people feel safe to share their experiences without fear of judgment. While the initial message of initiating conversations remains crucial, McPherson highlights a shift in focus. He states, 'Conversations about mental health don’t happen simply because we ask them to; they happen when people feel safe enough to answer honestly.'

This year's Shorts Day campaign aims to address the challenge of creating the right conditions for meaningful conversations. By promoting the idea that safe spaces are essential for mental health discussions, the campaign encourages participants to consider the environments around them. As McPherson explains, 'Sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer someone isn’t the perfect words. It’s a space where they feel ready to say their own.'

The major sponsor, RACT, aligns with the campaign's message by highlighting the importance of community support and connection. RACT Group CEO Mark Mugnaioni notes that Tasmanians' close-knit nature is a strength, stating, 'We’re a small state and that closeness is one of our greatest strengths.'

The event will feature a free community gathering in Hobart, offering a barbecue breakfast, free coffees, mental health resources, and family-friendly activities. Participants wearing shorts or Shorts Day merchandise can enter a prize draw, with a $1,000 gift card and RACT driving lesson packages as prizes. Last year's event saw over 23,000 Tasmanians participate, and organizers aim for an even larger turnout this year.

In my opinion, Shorts Day is a powerful initiative that goes beyond the act of wearing shorts. It encourages a cultural shift towards creating safe and supportive environments for mental health conversations. By focusing on the spaces and conditions that foster openness, the campaign challenges the notion that conversations alone are enough. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of trust, respect, and freedom from judgment, which are essential for meaningful connections and reduced stigma around mental health.
