When it comes to sports, few dynamics are as captivating as the powerful synergy between two star players. This was vividly illustrated in Phantom's latest triumph, marking their fourth consecutive win, thanks to the outstanding duo of Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Plum.
As we gear up for the highly anticipated one-on-one tournament kicking off on Wednesday, the excitement surrounding Unrivaled's regular-season games momentarily takes a break following a pair of Monday night clashes.
In a thrilling showdown, Phantom managed to rally from behind to secure a narrow victory over Vinyl, finishing at 76-73. In another match-up, Mist easily dispatched Rose with a dominant score of 90-64.
Phantom’s Dynamic Duo: A Game-Changing Performance
Basketball is undeniably a team sport, yet the influence of standout players can dramatically shift the game's outcome. In Phantom's match against Vinyl, Kelsey Plum and Aliyah Boston served as an unstoppable force, showcasing why they are regarded as the best guard-big combination in the league today.
Boston lit up the scoreboard with an impressive 33 points, complemented by 16 rebounds, earning her the title of Player of the Game. Plum also made her mark with 30 points while maintaining a commendable shooting accuracy of 50 percent. Remarkably, these two athletes accounted for a staggering 63 of Phantom’s total 76 points, underscoring their vital role in the victory.
This win not only secured Phantom a spot in the playoffs but also marked them as the second team in Unrivaled to clinch a postseason berth.
Despite their stellar performances, the path to victory was anything but smooth for Phantom. At the midpoint of the third quarter, Vinyl had established an 11-point lead. However, Phantom responded with a fierce run, highlighted by Boston's interior scoring, Kiki Iriafen's contributions, and a three-pointer from Natasha Cloud. Following another long-range shot from Boston, the game was suddenly a nail-biting one-point affair.
Vinyl managed to regain some distance heading into the final quarter, leading 65-61. Yet, Plum and Iriafen quickly narrowed the gap again, but Vinyl's Erica Wheeler, Rhyne Howard, and Brittney Griner kept the pressure on. The game was intense, with the winning threshold set at 76 points and Vinyl holding 73—victory was within their grasp.
However, fortune turned as Vinyl struggled to find their rhythm, allowing Plum to seize control. A critical three-pointer propelled Phantom ahead, followed by a dazzling play where she left Rae Burrell, her teammate from the Los Angeles Sparks, bewildered with a crafty pump fake and agile footwork, sealing the game for Phantom.
For Vinyl, this season has been disappointing; currently sitting at a 4-7 record, merely reaching the playoffs would be considered a significant achievement for them. Despite Howard's commendable performance with 22 points and Dearica Hamby's effective shooting with 14 points at 60 percent accuracy, a poor third-quarter showing and faltering offensive execution in crucial moments ultimately resulted in yet another heartbreaking loss.
Mist Versus Rose: A Game Decided Early On
On the same Monday evening, Rose made headlines with a surprising three-player trade involving Breeze and Hive—the first such in-season trade in Unrivaled’s history. Courtney Williams moved from Vinyl to Breeze, Saniya Rivers transitioned from Hive to Vinyl, and Azurá Stevens shifted from Rose to Hive. This shake-up might have impacted Rose's performance as they faced Mist.
The match began competitively, with Shakira Austin and Chelsea Gray keeping Rose in the hunt, trailing by a mere two points after seven minutes. However, the tide quickly turned in the second quarter when Mist ramped up their intensity, causing Rose to falter.
Breanna Stewart ignited Mist's scoring, with Allisha Gray contributing significantly, and once Arike Ogunbowale found her rhythm, the lead swiftly ballooned to double digits.
Stewart kicked off the second half with a layup that extended Mist's lead to 20 points, and unfortunately for Rose, they never found the momentum to counter Mist's onslaught. Ogunbowale, who was named Player of the Game, delivered an impressive 29 points, while Gray dazzled with 19 points at an incredible 70 percent shooting rate, and Stewart rounded out the effort with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Austin managed to contribute 19 points for Rose, with Chelsea Gray adding 17 more, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome. Despite this setback, Rose remains in contention for a playoff spot, hoping to salvage their championship defense. In the wake of losing Stevens in the trade, it will be interesting to see whether Rose adds a new player to their permanent roster or leans on developmental talents to fill gaps caused by injuries or absences.
